Qualia Square takes its name from the word qualia, which refers to the highly subjective properties of our conscious experiences, unique to each individual. For instance, we don’t “see” the color red in quite the same way: each sensation is specific to the individual and cannot be summed up by the physical wavelength of red light. Qualia belong entirely to the individual; they cannot be described from the outside, nor can they be transmitted through quantitative information.
By their very nature, our interactions with art are filled with these qualia. No one reads a book or looks at an artwork in quite the same way. And yet, we sometimes share the same enthusiasm and find common ground in some form of “culture”. Qualia Square is one of these places where a love for art can be nurtured, in all its forms.
