The book gets its name from the chemises (the cardboard folders or jackets) that the Malian photographer Malick Sidibé used in his Bamako studio during the 1960s and 1970s. Sidibé glued contact prints directly onto these folders, which documented the vibrant nightlife, parties, and youth culture of Bamako. He hung these folders on his studio door so clients could browse and order their prints.
